Singapore Seminar - Trading in Uncertain Times
This year, our annual Singapore seminar was held at the Marina Mandarin Hotel on 12th September.
Geopolitical risk is a strong theme for this year. UKDC’s seminar “Trading in Uncertain Times” focused on several key threats, including sanctions, war risks and the impacts of such events on global trade shipping.
Adam Smith, formerly of OFAC and now a sanctions specialist lawyer at Gibson Dunn LLP, gave a fascinating insight into how OFAC approach, formulate and enforce sanctions. Darren Liew, General Manager (Research) at Clarksons Platou Asia Pte. Limited, provided a market overview, with particular focus on the impact of the various key geopolitical events of this year on trade. Sean Geraghty then brought the contractual issues facing owners and charterers to life with a case study, walking through various contractual conundrums resulting from geopolitical risks.
The seminar was brought to a close with a lively Q&A, chaired by the Club’s Chairman, Daniel Evans. Afterwards, the guests had an opportunity to network and further quiz the speakers over cocktails.
The seminar will be run again in Athens on 3rd December, 2019. Details will follow.
